heart in his throat, ollie gathers up his things. this time, he doesn't even bother asking francie myrtle for advice, knowing that this was something that he better do himself.

[break][break] ma had said it herself - or at least, the mist version of her had. there was no point in any of this, if he didn't put his whole heart into it.

[break][break] ollie looked at the tray of cupcakes in front of him, which were nowhere as cute as the ones that he'd made (and had stolen) weeks ago. but they were a labor of love, one that he hoped that she could see.

[break][break] he hoped she already knew.

[break][break] willow atkins had told him he was obvious, but did penny know?

[break][break] emerald eyes glance towards the pikachu on the counter, flashing him a sheepish smile. "think it'll work, bud?"

[break][break] tofu gave him a thumbs up of encouragement, and they were off.

[break][break] standing in front of PENELOPE LIVY's door, ollie wraps his knuckles against the frame. or at least he was, but the door was cracked open just a little bit. and he'd gone over to her apartment plenty of times - at least, before he went to kanto - so he knew she wouldn't be too upset. even so, he pops his head in the gap.

[break][break] "i brought cupcakes. are you home?"

[break][break] no answer. he slips off his shoes, calling into the open space and across the carpeted floor that was too much like his own.

For the most part, ollie morales would come to find the apartment no different than it had been on his previous visit. Crushed cans still filled the trash bins and tabletop. The random assortment of jackets and coats was sprawled out behind chairs and on the back of the couch. The TV was on, flicked onto some random TV show about aliens living among us.

The more he inched through the apartment, however, the more he would come to notice the soft murmurings that leaked out from her room. Some came out as inaudible words, some came out as soft giggles, and some came out as sounds that might strike a match of gut-twisting familiarity.

"Matias," she murmured, voice bridging the beginnings of a moan. The classic button-up she'd always donned had been ravaged and left hanging open, granting a window to the black lace that lay inside.

Balancing off the edge of the bed, the two were entangled into one another in more ways than one. Treasures were being explored, secrets were being shared, but worst of all, an insufferable amount of pleasure was being had.

in retrospect, he should've knocked. that would have been the normal thing to do, the sane thing to do. but before leaving for kanto, he'd gotten so used to falling into the routine of things. even though they didn't know what they were yet, they'd hung out a lot.

[break][break] it wasn't for anything other than his own bleeding heart, but he'd helped her with a ton of things. fixed lightbulb fixtures, adjusted a leaky sink, watered her plants when she had to work overtime.

[break][break] they lived so close together that it just made sense.

[break][break] they spent time together like they were old friends - and even during the battle, penny had said it too. they were friends. he would've had no reason to think any different, and she had never given him any signs that she felt differently.

[break][break] it was like puzzle pieces sliding back together.

[break][break] or so he'd thought.

[break][break] but when he steps into the apartment, looking around at the empty space, he wonders if maybe she'd just accidentally left her door unlocked before leaving for the day. it was unlike her; a councilwoman needed to always be prepared. ollie's about to turn back, leave the cupcakes on the countertop, when he hears a sound.

[break][break] blinking, he steps towards the bedroom to investigate the source of the sound, when he stills. it wasn't just penny in the room. dread fills his veins, followed by soul-crushing disappointment.

[break][break] oh CIAN MAHER. they were back together, weren't they? embarassment floods his cheeks at the thought. "uh - i'll just leave -" not that they're there to hear him. if ollie had anything to do with it, he'd keep the secret of this particular adventure to his grave. after all, he'd been the one to push her away. tell her to take her time, that he'd wait forever for -

[break][break] this time, it's not his thoughts or his voice, but someone elses. someone who isn't CIAN MAHER.

[break][break] suddenly, ollie isn't in control of himself. the metal tray of cupcakes drop on the floor as he crosses the room in several strides, throwing the door open. no, it can't be. it can't.

[break][break] "matias?"

[break][break] the puzzle pieces slid out of place.

[break][break] he sees red.

[break][break] before he knows what he's doing, he's crossing the room. his arm propped back like a gun, before surging forward to aim an uppercut in the elite four's upper jaw, his other hand grasping what remains of the other's shirt.

the clambering of metal is enough to tear him away, though he doesn't peel himself off her. ollie morales has the pleasure of doing that with an uppercut to the jaw.[break][break]

his head snaps back, clearly rocked by the punch only to be tugged back by the collar of his shirt.[break][break]

recognition doesn't come immediately. instincts kick in as he uses the momentum to ram his forehead into ollie's nose, looking to buy himself enough space to shove him back.[break][break]

"fuck you!"[break][break]

and he's quick to follow, looking to tackle them to the floor to throw more punches.[break][break]

The hard, solid touch of Matias' hands gripping at her waist was euphoric in nature. It pulled not only at her desire for more, but at her heart, which felt ablazed with the passion of the intimacy shared between them.

The loud claumor of metal hitting the ground drove Penelope's attention back to the door. Back to the man she'd once shared her everything with. Her eyes took the shapes of widened saucers, like a deer caught in the headlights of their predator.

There was no stopping the next blur of movements. Being ripped apart from one another, her body was forcibly left toppling backwards toward the ground with a loud unceremonious thud. From there, she could only watched the savagery erupt between the two men.

PENELOPE LIVY's cries fell on deaf ears. it didn't matter, not anymore. not when it was matias in the picture, and not CIAN MAHER.

[break][break] pain flashes in his forehead as MATIAS SILPH crashes into his. ollie is knocked backwards, staggering, before he's suddenly tackled to the ground. a sound mixed with pain and surprise falls from him, before he's throwing up his elbows in a defensive measure to protect himself from the pummeling blows of the elite four.

[break][break] even though he's still a ranger, ollie grew up with a gaggle of brothers. he knew what it was like to fight, and fight dirty.

[break][break] "fuck you," he snaps.

[break][break] on the carpeted floor of the councilwoman's home, his breath is ragged as he grapples with matias on the floor.

[break][break] "you. fucking. asshole! you broke my sister's heart, and now you're going after penny too?"

[break][break] not on his fucking life.

[break][break] fists clenched, ollie's knee makes a fierce jab to MATIAS SILPH groin. unforgiving in it's ascent.

[break][break] he then leaps back at him, aiming his fists towards the other's face with a blitzkrieg of assault.

as the two men fumble around on the ground, he hears her voice call out to them, and only then does he realize just who it is he's punching.[break][break]

in that brief moment of hesitation, the jab to his groin connects, knocking the wind out of him entirely. he curls up, falling back and leaving himself defenseless.[break][break]

he turns on his side, raising an arm up to try and shield himself from the blitzkrieg of punches. they find their way through anyway, one after the other, breaking skin.[break][break]

De-escalation became a futile dream nearly forgotten in the raw display of violence rolling along her floor.

It didn't take long for red to mark their engagement and bloody whatever pieces of guilt she once felt. The more Ollie's fists fell down, the more it poured, and the more her mind solidified itself in overwhelming GRUDGE.

"Ollie, Ollie stop!"
[break][break]

Try as she might, there was no swaying a man lost to his emotions.
[break][break]

It'd been years since she last saw him like this. Narrow-minded and bullish, the last time this type of behavior fell over him was during a night out in Slateport. It'd taken weeks for Penny to see him the same after.

Years for her to forget it completely.
[break][break]

Only for it to come undone in a matter of seconds.

"Ollie--"

There was no use.
[break][break]

She ran to her nightstand, tearing the drawer open wide enough to find her tactical belt folded up inside. A Pokeball is plucked from its chains, and with a click, a Mr Rime is spat out from its red and white jaws.

It doesn't take long for him to understand the situation.

A pink blanket of PSYCHIC energy enveloped the ranger, forcing him not only to stop, but move several inches away. During this, the councilwoman wasted no time slipping between them and immediately falling to MATIAS SILPH's aid.

Immense worry glazed over the HATRED that bubbled deep within the ringlets of her golden eyes.
[break][break]

The psychic grip is released.
[break][break]

She doesn't even bother turning to face Ollie anymore.
[break][break]

"I think you should leave."
[break][break]

Her voice was ice, her body cold. All memories of warmth had been thoroughly vanquished and wrung out of her.

"You okay," she murmured back down at Matias, hands reaching for his face. There was no telling what was broken or just merely bruised, leaving her mind to only assume the worst. Another wave of GRUDGE flashed over her.

ollie was a morales. in so many ways, both he and his sister held a golden reputation within the league. this didn't mean they were perfect, but their actions spoke of people who had earned respect from others throughout their careers. they were glowing examples of hope and promise, illuminated by nothing more than their cheer and good will.

[break][break] if anyone were to be asked their opinion of ollie, the answer would most likely be good. his passion for the league and the rangers were unbound, a man who was filled to the brim with boundless excellence.

[break][break] no one could ever hate you.

[break][break] willow had said it once at the masquerade, for everyone to hear. ollie was a good person through and through. no one could hate him, not even if they tried. but willow atkins didn't know about this part of ollie - the part that he tried to keep buried down deep inside. the part of him that only people like PENELOPE LIVY knew.

[break][break] blood dripped down his forehead from where MATIAS SILPH had struck him, but the minute that the elite four curled up on the floor like a fetus, the battle had been won. rage filled ollie's mind as he thought about everything that MATIAS SILPH had taken from them, from Eva Morales, from PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] how could he do this? to the person he wasn't supposed to marry? to the family he was supposed to marry into?

[break][break] in the darkness, somehow her voice broke through. a phoenix amongst the ashes.

[break][break] the HATRED stamped her voice down.

[break][break] that afternoon, ollie morales's already fragile heart fractured into pieces.

There was no point in delving into explanations. There was no describing what shame was to HATRED. To ENVY. How little it all meant in the end, and how suffocating these newfound entanglements had become.

pain and resentment build inside ollie as his ex spits her words outloud to him, flaying all of his insecurities and FEARS on a stake.

[break][break] his words echo back at her, not even using the moment to look at MATIAS SILPH. while moments ago, his thoughts had been full of nothing but the elite four and the rage that his actions had elicited, now his attention was focused directly on penny.

[break][break] ollie had long ago come to the conclusion that he wasn't a good person, at least not to PENELOPE LIVY. her words slick away like water droplets against the armor that is now his burdened heart.
